The Moneylender’s Daughter
V. A. Richardson
Fiction (Series)
Ages 12 and up
Bloomsbury, 2006, 1-58234-855-5
Adam Windjammer has left Amsterdam behind and is now sailing out across the ocean in the Draco, the last of the Windjammer ships. One of his father’s old friends came to the aid of the destitute Windjammer family, giving them a home to live in and buying back the last ship, the Draco, so that Adam would have some means to bring the family business back from ruin. But before business can be conducted Adam has to look for the lost fleet – he has to keep his father’s promise to the families back in Amsterdam and he has to, if nothing else, let the ghosts rest in peace.
As Adam looks for the remains of the lost fleet, the moneylender Hugo Van Helsen, the cause of Windjammer’s downfall, is seeking new ways to destroy the Windjammers. He wants the Draco for his own purposes and he will do anything to get what he wants. Meanwhile Van Helsen’s headstrong daughter Jade will do anything she can to stop her father from marrying her off to the most convenient and richest man he can. His indifference to her feelings hurts her and it is clear that more than anything, her father wishes he had had a son instead of a useless daughter. Jade becomes more and more determined that she will prove to him that she can be useful to him even if she is a girl. The question is, will she sell her soul to devil to do this? Will she destroy the lives of countless good people to gain the respect of her father?
This gripping sequel to “The House of Windjammer” continues the story of the Dutch merchant family whose fortunes were so reliant on the shipping, trade, and political events which took place around the world in the early and mid 1600’s. It is interesting to watch how Adam and Jade evolve and to see how they learn that the world is not always as simple as it seems. As much as Adam would like to hate Jade for being a Van Helsen, he cannot seem to be able to do so as wholeheartedly as he would like. And as much as Jade would like to be completely self centered, doing the right thing has a nasty habit of creeping up on her.
