The Authors and Illustrators - Profiles

Pat Schories

Pat Schories says: "My childhood was spent outdoors, playing, and indoors, with books and art. I was lucky; I had a mother who read to me.
I graduated from Kent State University in Ohio in 1974, with a BFA in graphic design and illustration. I knew I wanted to illustrate children’s books, and moved to NY shortly thereafter. My first job was at a small book design studio, where I learned first hand about book design and publishing. It took me several years to land my first book illustration contract with Kate Klimo at Dutton, for a book entitled “Puddle Duck”.
In 1989, I was delighted to have my first complete book dummy accepted by Stephen Roxburgh at Farrar, Straus, Giroux, a wordless book entitled “Mouse Around”. I then wrote and illustrated “He’s Your Dog!”
and “Over Under In The Garden”, also both published by FSG.
In 1996, I illustrated my first Harper Collins “I Can Read” book, “Biscuit”, by Alyssa Capucilli. I plan to work on many more books starring Biscuit the puppy. In addition to Biscuit, I am working on several wordless picturebooks starring "Jack" the dog, published by Front Street, Inc.
Both Biscuit and Jack are patterned after my own two beloved dogs, Speed and Spike."
