Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog

Cynthia Rylant

Illustrated by Arthur Howard

Fiction (Series)

Ages 6 to 9

Harcourt, 1994, 0-15-200891-8

One day Mrs. Teaberry, who is Mr. Putter’s very dear neighbor, has a fall and hurts herself. The doctor tells her that she will have to rest her injured foot for a week and she will not be able to walk her dog Zeke. Because he is very fond of Mrs. Teaberry Mr. Putter offers to walk Zeke for her.

Unfortunately for Mr. Putter Zeke is not a very well behaved dog when he goes for his walks. He is not, as Mr. Putter thought, “a dream dog.” Zeke tugs and tugs poor Mr. Putter all over the place. Then he wraps Mr. Putter around trees. After this Zeke chases big dogs of all kinds until Mr. Putter is quite worn out and very worried about what he is going to do about Zeke. How on earth is Mr. Putter going to survive a whole week of this behavior? Zeke is not “a dream dog” at all. Instead he is “a nightmare.” Is there anything that can be done to get Zeke to behave himself?

In this truly delightful Mr. Putter and Tabby story, the two great friends once again come together to charm readers with a timeless little adventure which captures the joys of everyday life. Simply yet engagingly written, and charmingly illustrated throughout, this is a chapter book which will surely capture the interest of all kinds of young readers.
