The Authors and Illustrators - Profiles

Kristin Wolden Nitz

Kristin Wolden Nitz grew up in Duluth, Minnesota on the western tip of Lake Superior. For college, she moved to an even colder and snowier place: Houghton, Michigan, which is home to Michigan Tech. She met her husband Kurt there in the first quarter of her freshman year. After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering, she worked at a series of jobs at small electronics firms while her husband trained to become a submarine officer. Due to a series of moves, they had one child on the East Coast, one on the West Coast and one in the Midwest.
Once her husband left the Navy, Ms. Nitz looked forward to settling down for at least five years in the same house. But then an unparalleled chance presented itself: the opportunity to live in Merano, a small city in the Italian Alps. Merano became the setting for her first published novel, Defending Irene from Peachtree Publishers. Her second novel is scheduled to come out in the fall of 2006. She’s also written three sports books for Lerner: Fundamental Softball, Play by Play Track, and Play by Play Field Events. Her short stories and articles have appeared in Highlights, Cricket, Soccer Jr. and Hopscotch. She now lives with her husband and three children near Holland, Michigan.
