I’m a Pill Bug

Yukihisa Tokuda

Illustrated by Kiyoshi Takahashi

Non-Fiction Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Kane/Miller, 2006, 1-929132-95-6

Have you ever looked under a rock or a piece of wood in your garden and found lots of little grey round things underneath? Did you wonder what the little round grey thing were? Well, if you have done these things then you are going to really enjoy this book because it is all about these mysterious little round grey things.

They are pill bugs, little creatures which are related to crabs and which belong to the same family as insects. These little creatures are often found near the homes of people because – prepare yourself for this one – they eat stones and concrete. They need these things to keep their insides working properly so that they can digest the leaves, dead bugs, pet food, and other scraps that they eat.

Another interesting thing about pill bugs is that they can roll up into a ball if they are threatened. If an ant attacks them for example the pill big will roll up tight, like an armadillo, and it will stay that way until the ant goes away.

Children who have an interest in little creatures will be fascinated by this cleverly written and cunningly illustrated picture book. Who thought that such little animals could have such interesting lives? By choosing to write the text as if the pill bug is speaking, the author makes the animal very accessible to children. They will come to feel that they know the pill bug well. The author even has her pill bug narrator tell her audience how they can watch pill bugs up close by creating a little habitat for it in a plastic container.
