I hear the wind

  A child is lying in bed on a windy autumn night. The wind is tossing leaves “over the rooftop” and it “raises and falls like an ocean wave.” To the child the wind almost seems like a living thing the way it moans about the house, the way it carries leaves high into the sky in great spirals. It seems to crawl “through the twisted bare branches” of the trees outside and it howls through the countryside like a freight train chugging along at full speed. The child cannot help wondering where the wind came from and where it will go next.

  One thing the child is sure of – that the wind cannot reach the warmth of his own little room and his own cozy bed. Here at least he is safe while the wind rushes by on its headlong journey “through the night.”

  In this picture book with its lyrical text and its striking black and white illustrations, the author captures the beauty and mystery of a windy autumn night as seen through a young child’s eyes.
