Harvey the Baker
Lars Klinting
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 3 to 5
Kingfisher, 1996, 0-7534-5913-2
It is Harvey the beaver’s birthday and his special day begins when little Chip brings Harvey some flowers as a birthday gift. Harvey decides that he will bake a birthday cake. With Chip’s help Harvey finds a cookbook and then the two beavers collect the ingredients that they are going to need to make “the yummiest birthday cake ever.”
Next Harvey and Chip get to work to make the cake. They prepare the baking pan and then they mix together all the ingredients to make the cake batter. After making a frightful mess in the kitchen the beavers put the cake in the oven. Now they have to clean up all the spills and dirty dishes! They can’t wait for the cake to be ready.
In this delightful little picture book young children will be able to see how a cake is made and better still they will find a child friendly recipe in the back of the book which they can try for themselves, with the help of a grown-up of course. Charming illustrations and charismatic characters make this book a joy to read and to share.
