Fancy Nancy: Bonjour Butterfly

Jane O’Connor

Illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser

Picture Book (Series)

Ages 4 to 6

HarperCollins, 2008, 978-0-06-123588-7

Nancy is in a high state of flutter. Her friend Bree is going to be having a birthday party with a butterfly theme. Since Nancy thinks butterflies are “exquisite” it is almost as if this party was designed especially for her.

Nancy is therefore quite devastated when her mother tells her that she won’t be able to go to Bree’s party because the family have to go Nancy’s Grandparents’ party. Her grandparents will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary and it is to be a very special occasion.

Nancy scowls, sulks, and storms for the next two days. Nothing, it seems, will pull her out of her deep pout.

Fancy Nancy is, without a doubt, one of the most memorable little girl book characters. Her highly developed sense of diva style is a delight to the eye, and her fondness for French words is sweetly amusing. Who can resist a little girl who wears a tiara, a headband, and a flower tucked behind her ear all at the same time.

With humor and an obvious appreciation for the inner thoughts of little girls, Jane O’Connor shows her readers that good things can come out unfortunately situations.
