Eloise takes a Bawth
Kay Thompson
Drawings by Hilary Knight
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 5 and up
Simon and Schuster, 2002, 0-689-84288-0
Nanny has told Eloise that it is time to get cleaned up, for Mr. Salomone, the Plaza Hotel Manager, is coming for tea. Nanny feels especially pleased because Mr. Salomone is taking precious time away from his duties which these days include overseeing the arrangements for the big Venetian Masked Ball. That very night the Plaza will be hosting a glittering fund raiser which promises to be a wonderful event.
So off Eloise goes for a "bawth" and what a time she has for when Eloise takes a bath she really takes a bath. This includes having fabulous imaginary adventures as she splashes about, singing loudly, and using a great deal of water, much of which ends up on the bathroom floor.
As the bath progresses people all over the hotel start to notice that water is leaking from the ceilings, the fixtures, and many other unexpected places. Poor Mr. Salomone is at his wits end. Where is the water coming from, and will they be able to go forward with the ball?
Children and their grown-ups will have a wonderful time seeing what a mess Eloise's watery bath causes and certainly parents will know all to well what it is like to walk into a very soggy bathroom on bath night. Perhaps the most amusing section of the book is seeing what happens in the ballroom as a result of Eloise's overzealous bath.
This "re-discovered" book which was brought to life in 2002, is a wonderful addition to the now classic Eloise picture books series. To create it Hilary Knight drew new illustrations to go with the text. This was pieced together using drafts written by Kay Thompson many years ago. For collectors and Eloise fans alike this newest addition to the series is a delight to read and to look at.

ACTION ALERT!

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
