In the High Hills the voles have discovered that their winter blankets have been badly eaten by moths. With winter approaching, it is very important that they get new blankets and Lily and Flax the weavers are busy making them. Wilfred is with them reading a book about the exploits of Sir Hogweed Horehound. How wonderful it would be to have adventures like the famous Sir Hogweed.
Sooner than he expects Wilfred finds himself in the middle of a very unexpected adventure. Wilfred is allowed to accompany Mr. Apple, Lily, and Flax when the party sets off to take the completed blankets to the voles in the High Hills. It is quite a walk and they don’t get to the vole homes before night begins to fall. The next day Mr. Apple and Wilfred decide to explore a bit before they head home. Unfortunately the two little mice get lost and their journey turns out to be a lot longer and more complicated than they had planned.
Readers who have met Wilfred in some of the other Brambly Hedge books will greatly enjoy reading about the adventurous little mouse who not only gets to go on a wonderful trip but who also turns out to be very resourceful when there is trouble.
