Toot and Puddle: The one and only
Holly Hobbie
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 4 to 6
Little Brown, 2006, 0-316-36664-1
When school starts in September there is a new student in Opal’s class. Her name is Jane and she very quickly decides that she wants to be friends with Opal. Not only does she want to be friends but she wants to be like Opal. Among other things she wears clothes that look like Opal’s clothes, she copies Opal’s Halloween costume, and she makes almost the same kind of paper snowflake that Opal makes.
Opal discusses the situation with Puddle and Toot when she visits them in Woodcock Pocket and they both explain that Opal must admire her. They do their best to support her when she expresses her annoyance at being copied all the time and when she feels hurt because Jane has hijacked her ideas.
Then, in May, the class prepares for their “theatrical extravaganza” and for once Jane is simply not able to copy Opal because she cannot get the steps right for the dance. No matter what Jane does she cannot get the “Hop, step, and kick” rhythm right. What is to be done about this situation? If Jane does not get it right the whole chorus line will be ruined.
Anyone who has been the victim of a copycat will be able to appreciate this story. There is nothing quite like having your ideas and your projects taken over by someone else. Luckily for Opal she has Puddle and Toot to remind her that there is only one Opal. She also has a good heart which is able to forgive and forget.
Wonderfully funny and highly expressive illustrations paired with a charming little story makes this book a delight to read.
