Beetle Bop

Denise Fleming

Picture Book

Ages 3 to 5

Harcourt, 2007, 978-0-15-205936-1

The world is full of all kinds of beetles. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They might be striped, spotted or dotted. They also make all kinds of noises, “buzzing,” “humming,” and “drumming” They fly, they crawl, they flip, and some can even swim. If they need to, beetles can stay hidden on a branch or in a pile of fallen leaves. Of course this does not save some of their number from becoming someone else’s dinner.

In this stunning picture book with its unique artwork the author gives her readers a sense of how many different kinds of beetles there are. They inhabit all kinds of habitats and they are rarely inactive, “crashing,” “whirling,” “gnawing” and flying their way around. Though the text is minimal, readers will get a rich and vivid sense of what the beetle world is like. Additional text at the back of the book provides readers with further information about these varied and remarkable creatures.
