Annie and Snowball and the prettiest house

Cynthia Rylant

Illustrated by Sucie Stevenson

Fiction (Series)

Ages 5 to 7

Simon and Schuster, 2008, 1-4169-0939-7

Annie has a wonderful life living with her dad and her pet bunny in a comfortable house. She is delighted that she is living next door to her cousin Henry, because Henry is not only a good cousin, but he is also her best friend. Annie also thinks Henry’s dog Mudge is terrific.

Annie does have one problem with her home. Though the house is comfortable enough, it is plain rather than pretty. Annie loves pretty things and it distresses her that her house is so unattractive.

One day Annie tells Henry about her situation and, being the good friend that he is, Henry makes a suggestion. He tells Annie that his attic is full of pretty things that once belonged to “grandmas and lots of aunts.” Perhaps she will find something in the attic that will allow her to make her home pretty and to her taste.

In this engaging Annie and Snowball title young readers will see how a family can work together to solve a problem. With cooperation, and some give and take, a solution is found.

This well written story perfectly suits beginner readers, and Henry and Mudge fans will be delighted to get to know his girl cousin and her family.
