  There are times when you want to read an alphabet book that tells a story or one that is full of all kinds of interesting information. And then there are times when you want something simple. This board book is of the latter type. You will get “F is for frog” and “O is for Owl” without any further embellishments. Small children will have an easy time following along, perhaps exploring the sounds with their adult reader.

  What makes this book special are the illustrations. The late Charley Harper loved nature and animals, and some of his wonderful illustrations have been carefully chosen to create a splendid animal alphabet in this book. Some of the animals that have been chosen are not what you would expect. For example in this book C is not for cat, instead it is for crab. And the crab that sits quietly at the bottom of the page is quite lovely with its delicate pincers raised. Indeed the pictures throughout this book are often surprising; they are touching, funny, and a joy to look at.

  In short this book brings together learning, art appreciation, and images from nature, and the combination is memorable.
