Winter's Tale: An Original Pop-Up Journey
Robert Sabuda
Pop-up Book
Ages 4 and up
Simon and Schuster, 2005, 0-689-85363-7
Imagine that it is a bright crisp snowy winter's morning and all the creatures in the woods are waking up and moving about. There are so many things to look at and admire, so many animals of all kinds and of all sizes going about on this beautiful snow covered day.
There is the owl flying "high overhead" and a pair of foxes all dressed up in their white winter coats. Down by the river an old bear tries to catch itself a meal but the fish get away in a flash of silvery water. The moose and the beavers catch your eye down by the swamp, one wading through the water and the others busy working on their lodge.
This glorious pop-up creation captures the magic of wintertime with its predominantly white color scheme which is touched with shining glitter, hints of green, blue, purple and brown. The final double page spread shows the whole scene of the woods and all the animals that we have met on our journey. This scene includes a little house and there is a very unexpected treat on this page which only goes to show that Robert Sabuda is truly a master paper smith.
The combination of a lyrical text with the superlative pop-up creations makes this book a must for all pop-up collectors.
