Winter Garden
Ruth Brown
Picture Book
Ages 3 to 5
Andersen Press UK, 2004, 1-84270-059-6
It is a cold winter night and the animals are out and about in the winter garden. There is the fox, the black cat, the rat, and some birds. One by one we meet these creatures as they go about there nighttime business. The fox tries to catch the rat, and the cat tries to catch the birds, each animal being connected with the other in a fascinating sequence of chance meetings. Best of all, in the morning, the little boy can see who has been in the garden the night before for they have left their tracks in the snow, and the story of their doings.
With its sturdy pages, its minimalist text and its gorgeous artwork this is a perfect book to share with a small child. It captures the beauty of the winter landscape and shows us how the animals encounter one another in their natural setting.
