Wilky the White House Cockroach
Howie Schneider
Picture Book
Ages 5 and up
Penguin, 2006, 0-399-24388-7
Wilky is the kind of cockroach who dreams of having adventures and of taking risks, just as his late uncle Julius did. So, one day, he leaves his home and crawls into a box of fresh hot mushroom and sausage pizza. The lid closes and the pizza is taken away with Wilky inside the box busily eating hot melted cheese.
When the box is opened Wilky is not longer in Oscar’s Pizza Palace; instead he is in the Oval Office of the White House and the President and First Lady throw a fit when they see him.
Soon all kinds of chairmen, ministers, and secretaries are looking for him. Traps are laid, dogs are brought out, and even the Director of the FBI is called in on the case. There is going to be a state dinner in the evening and no one wants a cockroach anywhere near the dinner plate of the French President.
But, no matter what they do, they cannot find Wilky until it is too late. Now the situation is really dire and the White House practically declares war on the lone cockroach. Thankfully there is one person in the White House who admires the little creature who has managed to remain at large for so long and he steps in, saying that the time has come to call a “truce.”
In this deliciously funny picture book Howie Schneider tells a wonderful story packed with tongue-in-cheek humor which readers of all ages will enjoy. Comic style illustrations perfectly capture the ludicrousness of Wilky’s situation and readers will definitely find themselves rooting for the little animal who is not “afraid to be afraid.” Clearly if you want to make more of yourself in this world, you have to be willing to take a risk or two, even if you are only a little insect which everyone loves to hate.
