When the Library Lights Go Out

Megan McDonald

Illustrated by Katherine Tillotson

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Simon and Schuster, 2005, 0-689-86170-2

The librarian turns out the lights, closes the door, and all is quiet. For a short while. Then Rabbit pokes his head out of the puppet box. He wonders where Hermit Crab is. Lion is fast asleep in the box snoring “just like a pig” so Rabbit looks for Hermit Crab on his own. With frequent interruptions to have a snack, to draw, and to play games Rabbit looks everywhere for his friend but he can’t find her.

Woken up by all the noise Rabbit is making, Lion joins the hunt. Together, armed with a flashlight and a “picnic,” the friends search the library for Hermit Crab and they have quite an adventure while they are about it.

Young children who know think that libraries are magical places will have all their suspicions confirmed as they read this book. They will laugh at the “adventures” the puppets have and at the wonderful imaginings they create. Who would have thought that a sleeping library could be such an exciting place.

Filled with softly illustrated shadowy and flashlight dappled illustrations, this charming picture book is a perfect title to share with a child or children at naptime or at bedtime.
