When the Frost is on the pumpkin

It is fall and in the morning, the “frost is on the punkin.” We are going to join a young girl as she walks around her farm and does her chores. We are going to hear the turkey “kyouck and gobble,” and the rooster “hallylooyer.” The air is crisp, and the girl is full of energy. She cartwheels across the grass as the red leaves drift down, and she climbs a tree to see the sun rising over the trees. In the fields, pumpkins wait to be gathered, and the barns are full of clover and hay.

With a rich collection of sound words, James Whitcomb Riley’s well-known poem is a delight to read out loud. He uses words in a creative way that children will enjoy and appreciate. Glenna Lang’s warm and spare illustrations beautifully compliment the poem.
