When Louis Armstrong taught me scat

Muriel Harris Weinstein

Illustrated by R. Gregory Christie

Picture Book

Ages 5 to 9

Chronicle Books, 2008, 978-0-8118-5131-2

One day a little girl and her mother are listening to the radio. Soon Momma is moved to dance and she and her daughter have a wonderful time waggling their heads and wiggling their hips to the music. Momma tells her daughter that they are listening to Louis Armstrong and that his words are scat – nonsense words that Louis strings together in interesting ways.

That night the little girl dreams that Louis Armstrong comes to her room to teach her how to sing scat. Soon the great musician and the little girl are creating scat that makes the feet tap and the heart sing.

In this musical story, the author perfectly captures Louis Armstrong’s ebullience and energy. Bouncing nonsense words and phrases dance off the pages, and readers will be hard pressed not to catch the scat bug.
