When Dinosaurs Came with Everything

Elise Broach

Illustrated by David Small

Picture Book

Ages 5 to 7

Simon and Schuster, 2007, 0-689-8922-3

Every Friday a little boy has to accompany his mother when she goes out to run her “boring errands.” This Friday is no different except that when they get to the bakery they see a sign which offers clients a free dinosaur if they buy a dozen doughnuts. Of course the sign must mean a toy dinosaur right? Wrong. For when the boy’s mother buys a box of doughnuts the bakery lady gives them a real live triceratops.

And so off the boy and his mother go with their triceratops following them. The boy’s poor mother is not at all sure that she likes the idea of having a dinosaur in the family but what can she do?

Their next stop is the doctor’s office where the boy is going to have his check up. Imagine his delight when he gets a dinosaur for being good instead of a sticker. This time his prize is a stegosaurus. His mother on the other hand is not at all pleased. She asks the nurses what “on earth is going on?” and they explain that today “dinosaurs come with everything.” It would appear that today is not at all like every Friday and the little boy loves it. His mother however, is very unhappy about the situation. Will she ever be get able to get used to having dinosaurs in the family?

Is there a child out there who hasn’t wished that he or she had a pet dinosaur? Surely it would be the most thrilling thing to have. In this thoroughly delightful story Elise Broach and David Small bring that dream to life, giving one little boy a perfect day when he is given no less than three dinosaurs of his very own. A deliciously warm and funny text and David Small’s marvelous illustrations make this a picture book which readers will find hard to resist.
