When Autumn Falls
Illustrated by Susan Swan
Ages 3 to 5
Albert Whitman, 2004, 0-8075-0490-4
Here is a picture of fall, of all the things that make fall so special and so enjoyable. There are leaves falling to the ground, leaves making "crunched-up" noises underfoot, ripe apples "for bobbing", the picking of a pumpkin for a "jack-o'-lantern," and changes in the light, the sky, the weather.
The author beautifully sets a mood with very minimal text, and perfectly chosen words, suggestive and full of imagery. To complement the text Susan Swan has created a remarkable series of three-dimensional, multi-media pictures which catch the essence of this very special season. This is a truly special picture book which will delight fall lovers and also the artistically inclined.
