Vera’s Halloween

Vera Rosenberry

Picture book (Series)

Ages 4 to 6

Henry Holt, 2008, 0-8050-8144-5

It is Halloween and this year Vera, dressed up as a mummy, is old enough to go trick-or-treating in the dark. She is so excited that she finds it hard to eat her dinner. It is going to be a wonderfully spooky night.

At long last it is time to leave, and Vera goes out with her father and her two older sisters. Everywhere there are people walking about in costumes, and the air is filled with the sounds of laughing, shouting, and “ringing doorbells.”

Everything goes well until Vera has to bend down to adjust one of her bandages. When she looks up she discovers that her father and sisters are gone. In pretty short order Vera’s special Halloween night turns into a disaster. Soon she discovers that she is lost. Then it starts to rain, to sleet, and then to snow. After Vera’s candy bag falls apart. What is she to do now?

In this entertaining book from the Vera series, readers will discover that even disasters like the ones Vera experiences can turn out all right in the end. Readers will enjoy following Vera’s adventures, and the ending brings the tale to a very satisfactory conclusion.
