Long ago there lived a priest called Valentine. He lived in a time and a place where people were not allowed to get married. Believing that this law was unfair Valentine conducted marriages in secret. For his kindness Valentine was imprisoned and later he was executed on February 14th. Before he died though he fell in love with and wrote letters to the jailer’s daughter signing the letters “From Your Valentine.”
Today lovers and sweethearts share their feelings for each other on this day by sending one another cards and gifts as a token of their affection. Cards are often decorated with hearts and cupids. Chocolates and flowers are the most popular gifts which couples give to one another on this special day.
Young children who do not know the story behind the Valentine’s Day traditions will find this book very interesting. They will learn all about how Valentine’s Day traditions have evolved over the years and at the back of the book their will find directions on how they can make Valentine’s Day cookies for the people whom they love.
