Monty Fitzgibbons is a young veterinarian who is tired of the humdrum work that he does for the army in which he serves. Instead of taking care of his fellow officer’s horses, he would much rather be working with the great paleontologist, Barnum Brown, on his dig in Montana. After getting Brown’s permission to join him in Montana, Monty leaves Newfoundland, where he was posted, and sets off to find his hero. After a long trip west by train Monty finally arrives in Miles City, Montana. In the small town, he gets himself a horse and some supplies, and he soon finds Brown’s camp. At first, despite his considerable knowledge of anatomy, Monty has a hard time figuring out what the dinosaurs looked like when they are alive. However, in time, Monty learns how to recognize and understand the fossils that he sees and finds. In addition, he begins to come up with his own theories about dinosaur physiology and behavior.

Monty grows to love the work so much that he ends up staying in Montana, despite the fact that he is supposed to return to his duties in Newfoundland. He also travels to Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas looking for, and finding, dinosaur fossils. He also has numerous adventures of other kinds. He encounters a grizzly bear, is hammered by a blizzard, and crashes his “newfangled” motorcycle.

With great skill, the author of this book combines fact and fiction to give his readers an entertaining and informative narrative. Dinosaur fans will soon find themselves getting caught up in Monty’s story, and they will learn a lot about the great animals. There are wonderful illustrations, maps, diagrams, and ‘period’ documents throughout the book.

In addition to the carefully crafted story, this novelty item includes a three-dimensional dinosaur, which readers are sure to enjoy putting together.

This is one of the titles in the Amazing Wonders Collection.
