Chiya and Chaipreak were two fun loving brothers who were looking forward to spending the morning playing on a nearby beach with their friends. The boys lived with their parents in the village of Khoa Lak, an area which is very popular with tourists. In every way that December 26th day was very normal. What no one knew was that 800 miles away an earthquake had given birth to an enormous series of waves, Tsunami waves, and soon after the boys got to the beach one of the waves hit the shore. The boys quickly climbed trees and watched as homes, cars, boats and much more were washed away.
After the nightmare was over the boys went home. Their house was gone but their mother was safe. Together the three of them went to high ground where they hoped they would be safe. The boy’s father could not be found.
Help began to arrive and soon the sick and injured were being tended to. Food and water was brought it and temporary housing was built for the many people who were homeless.
Though there can be no doubt that the Asian Tsunami was a terrible tragedy, it was also an event which brought people from all over the world together. Aid agencies, governments, and individuals all did what they could to help. They built schools, repaired bridges and offered comfort to children like Chiya and Chaipreak who had lost so much and who needed to feel safe and secure again.
By following the story of these two Thai boys, young readers will be able to get a sense of what it must have been like to be a victim of this terrible disaster and they will see that it takes the work of many people to help an area like Khoa Lak begin to recover.
This book is both moving and full of hope. Readers will be touched to learn that the book is dedicated to two people who were lost when the wave hit Khoa Lak.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the ISB Tsunami Relief Network.
