Learning about world geography can sometimes be a little overwhelming for young people. The earth is such a huge place, and maps can be hard to understand. In this book the author and her artistic team have created a book that even the most atlas or map phobic young reader will find interesting. By combining maps, illustrations, photographs, and text with pop-ups, pull-outs, sliders, and flaps, the publishers have created a title that is entertaining and easy to get into.

The author begins by telling her readers how to use the book and what they can expect as they go through the various sections. Next the author talks about how maps are made and the history of mapmaking. On these pages there is a pull-out that shows readers, in three dimensions, how a globe can be turned into a flat map. Next readers can find out about the basic geography of the earth including its climate and its basic structure.

After learning this background material, readers get to look at the countries around the world. The world is broken up into sections, and for each section there is a map, various novelty features such as pull-outs and flaps to lift, photographs, a sidebar containing a “Fact File,” and a written description.

Because of the way it is put together readers don’t have to read this book from cover to cover if they don’t want to. Instead they can dip into the book reading and exploring the pages that interest them the most.
