One cold winter's night Emma's world is suddenly and horribly changed when a fire consumes her home taking almost her entire family with it. Now Emma has to decide how she and her little brother John are going to live, where they are going to go. Most of us would find it hard to imagine having to take on so much responsibility at the age of thirteen. And, in fact, at first, Emma sees herself as being someone who should be cared for by someone else. Then, as time passes and as she discovers her own strengths and weaknesses, she realizes that she is not content to take on a passive role and wants to control what happens to her.
Powerfully written, yet sensitive to the fears a young girl may have at such a time and in such a place, this is a book to be read and re-read. The author has managed to walk in Emma's shoes as she struggles to make sense of her world and her place in it. Emma's story continues in "The Quarter Pie Window," and "The Sign of the Scales." A thought provoking and moving tale.
