The Sisters Grimm: The Unusual Suspects

Michael Buckley

Fiction (Series)

Ages 8 to 12

Harry Abrams Inc, 2005, 9780810959262

Sabrina and Daphne have been able to put off going to school for weeks but the reprieve is now over. Their social worker has turned up and forced the issue so the girls must now bite the bullet and accept their fate. Daphne is pretty lucky because she has lovely, sweet, and kind Miss Snow (Snow White) for her teacher, but Sabrina has Mr. Grumpner as her home room teacher and he is a nightmare. Sabrina’s classmates are not much better and she begins to think that sixth grade is going to be one long year of purgatory.

And then things get worse. Sabrina comes into her classroom at the end of the day to discover that Mr. Grumpner has been killed and trussed up in spider’s web. A red hand print has been left behind on the chalkboard. If would appear that the Scarlet Hand is behind this killing. Naturally Granny Relda begins to investigate, called in by Mayor Charming to help the hopelessly overworked police force of Ferryport Landing.

Unfortunately Mr. Grumpner’s is only the first of a series of killings. Not long after his dreadful demise the school caretaker is also killed. On top of this Granny, the sisters and Mr. Canis are pursued by a terrifying frog girl monster who is determined to kill them too. It is only because Granny is a crazy driver that they are able to get away at all.

No one can figure out who is behind the attacks or why. Who are these Everafter monsters and why are they attacking humans all of a sudden? As Granny and the authorities try to put together the pieces of the puzzle, Sabrina, Daphne and Puck keep looking for clues in the school, the place where it all began. The biggest problem Sabrina has is that she distrusts all the Everafters so much that she might not be the best person for this job. Can she overcome her prejudice in time to solve the mystery before it is too late?

In this often hilarious and always thoroughly entertaining second book in the Sister’s Grimm series, Michael Buckley takes his readers on a wild ride through Ferryport Landing. Readers get to meet a new set of characters to add to the ones that the met in the first book including Snow White, Beauty and her Beast, The Pied Piper, and the Frog Prince. This time Sabrina struggles with her own feelings regarding the Everafters and she realizes for the first time that perhaps those feelings are not what they should be. There is therefore, a thoughtful side to this story along with all the adventure, humor, and slapstick, and this makes the tale wonderfully balanced and a joy to read.
