The Red Book
Barbara Lehman
Wordless Picture Book
Ages 5 to 8
Houghton Mifflin, 2004, 0-618-42858-5
One day a little girl is walking to school through the snowy streets of the city. As she is walking she sees a red book lying in a snow bank. She picks the book up and takes it with her. Later the girl opens up the book and on the first page she sees a map. On the map there is an island and on that island she sees that there is a little boy walking along a golden beach. Half buried in the sand the boy sees the cover of a red book which he picks up and opens. On the first page he sees a picture of a snowy city and through the window of one of the tall buildings he sees a little girl looking at a book.
The two children look at one another and smile. If only there were some way that they could meet. Could such a thing be possible?
This wordless book is full of the magic of possibilities. Readers will be reminded that books can indeed take us on journeys to far off places, making it possible for us to ‘meet’ all kinds of people and to ‘see’ all kinds of wondrous things. Readers will be amazed at the way in which the author manages so well to tell a meaningful and powerful story without saying a single word. Her crisp and beautifully colored artwork is more than enough to show her readers that books, the imagination, and a little bit of magic make a powerful combination.
