The Most Fantastic Atlas of the Whole Wide World by the Brainwaves

Non-Fiction (Series)

Dorling Kindersley, 2008, 978-0-7566-4009-5

The Brainwaves are back and this time the “little people with big ideas” are going to show us all kinds of fascinating things about our world. Not only are there six incredible double fold out pages to explore – one for each of the continents - but there are lots of other pages packed with information, bizarre tit bits of knowledge, and fantastic illustrations. Of course the little Brainwaves will accompany us on our journey, getting into trouble, cracking jokes, and showing us some of the wonders of our incredible planet.

The Brainwaves begin by telling us about our planet. They show us why there are four seasons, what the earth’s atmosphere is like, where the earth is located in the solar system, and more. They then zoom in and take an in-depth look at the North American continent.

Your first view of this double page spread is of a map of the continent showing the major borders, the largest mountain ranges, the largest lakes and rivers, and the state borders. The Brainwaves also tell us a little about some of the geographical features for this region, including the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. Open the map up and you are presented with a long “Crazy Golf” picture. Here you will find out about all kinds of things about North America. For example did you know that the farms in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are some of the biggest of their kind in the world? And did you know that two thirds of the island of Montserrat is uninhabited because of the volcano that exploded there in 1997?

And this is just the beginning of what is a fascinating fact filled journey around the world. In addition to looking at the world’s six continents, the Brainwaves also look at the earth’s inner structure, the surface of the earth, the earth’s weather and climate, the oceans, the population of this planet, and more. Readers can read the book from cover to cover, or they can dip into it when the mood catches them. Whichever way they do it, they will find that there is literally hours worth of material to examine, smile over, and explore. Without a doubt the Brainwaves provide readers with a painless and very enjoyable way to learn.

This is one in a series of titles - featuring the Brainwaves - written by Simon Adams and illustrated by Lisa Swerling and Ralph Lazer.
