The Mole Sisters and the Piece of Moss
Roslyn Schwartz
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 3 to 6
Annick Press, 2004, 1-55037-582-2
The mole sisters live in a hole in the ground but they venture out into the interesting world above ground all the time. After all there is so much to see and do in this world and it would be dull to stay underground all the time. One thing the mole sisters are not is dull.
One day the mole sisters come across a clump of moss. The moss thinks its life is dull so the sisters decide to help it out. First they comfort and console the moss telling it that it is “lovely.” Then they pick up the moss and they carry it right to the top of the hill. There is no way the moss can have a dull life up there, “on top of the world.”
The mole sisters then have a wonderful, and giggly, sort of time getting home and as the sun sets and the stars come out they are reminded of how wonderful they, and their world, is.
All too often we forget how splendid life can be. We forget to appreciate the little things like twinkling stars, sunsets, pretty flowers, and soft and brilliantly green pieces of moss. The mole sisters do not forget these things bless them, and this charming little story about them and their simple little adventure is sure to delight children and the grownups in their lives. Delightful colored pencil drawings perfectly compliment the simple yet meaningful text.
