The Magic Finger

Roald Dahl

Illustrated by Quentin Blake

Fiction

Ages 6 to 8

Penguin, 2002, 0141302291

I am sure that you sometimes loose your temper and get annoyed with people. I know I that I do. Well, this is the story of little eight year old girl who also sometimes loses her temper but when she loses her temper with people she puts the magic finger on them. What does that mean? It means that something awful happens to the people that she gets annoyed with.

Let me tell you about the Greggs. The Greggs live next to the little girl and they are absolutely potty about hunting. They love the sport and whenever they get the chance Mr. Gregg and his two sons Philip and William go out and shoot everything that moves. The little girl hates hunting with a passion and one day she gets so angry with the Greggs that she “PUT THE MAGIC FINGER ON THEM ALL!”

Ooon after she put the magic finger on them the Greggs went out hunting and they killed a lot of wild ducks. Then after a while they started missing and four ducks seem to be chasing them. It was very unnerving. The hunters decided to go home and call it a day. When they woke up the next morning the Greggs discovered that they had all been changed into pint sized half people half ducks. They had wings instead of arms and they could fly. To their horror large human sized ducks came into their home and chased them out.

The poor Greggs had to learn how to live like birds and they even had to build a nest for themselves in a tree. When the human sized ducks brought out guns and threatened to shoot them the Greggs finally realized what it was like to be on the receiving end of a gun barrel. What were they going to do now?

In this delightful book for young readers Roald Dahl takes his readers on a magical adventure which animal lovers will especially appreciate. With a perfect ending, plenty of humor, and Quentin Blake’s wonderful illustrations throughout, this is a perfect book for children who are eager to books that are more challenging.
