Trying to learn about the history of an era is not an easy thing to do. There is so much information out there, and there is so much to learn and to absorb. In this excellent book readers will be presented with a unique approach to the study of world history. The time period covered is from 1800 to the present, and it is explored using a series of detailed maps and articles. All of the maps include a sidebar containing a timeline and they include a text section and plenty of annotations.

The author begins by discussing what he means by the words “modern world,” using a map and a fascinating article to tell his story. He then goes on to look at Europe during the time when Napoleon Bonaparte was having a big impact on that part of the world. A section of text briefly describes what took place during this time, and a large almost full page map supplements this information very well.

This page is followed by an article about the industrial revolution that is full of annotated photographs and illustrations. Here readers will find out how much the industrial revolution changed the world and how, though it did make life easier for some, for others it made their existence a miserable one.

This illuminating section is followed by the map showing the countries that were a part of the British Empire. Readers will soon discover here that the British colonial machine was a powerful one, one that would have an enormous impact on the history of the world.

Using a combination of text, maps, and annotated photos and illustrations, Simon Adams tells such an entertaining story that even children who shy away from history will find this book interesting and accessible.
