The dragons of Ordinary Farm

Tad Williams and Deborah Beale

Fiction (Series)

Ages 9 to 12

HarperCollins, 2009, 0061543454

Tyler and Lucinda’s mother has decided that she is going to go away for a singles retreat. She is delighted, therefore, when a distant relative invites the children to spend some time on his farm. Both Lucinda and Tyler are appalled. How can their mother send them off to stay with someone they have never met? Not only that, but their Uncle Gideon is a farmer. What could be worse?

The brother and sister are not at the farm long before they realize that Ordinary Farm is not ordinary at all. Instead of having cows and sheep, this farm has a very large – and dangerous – dragon, and a herd of unicorns. In fact, the place is full of strange creatures that belong in fairy tales, not on a farm in California. Where did they come from and why are they there?

Though their Uncle Gideon’s secret is more than a little bizarre, Lucinda and Tyler soon come to believe that there are more secrets on Ordinary Farm. Things are not at all what they seem and danger lurks just below the surface.

With mysteries, magic, and a pleasantly unpredictable plot, this first book in a new series is a delight to read. Readers who enjoy reading about dragons and other fantastical creatures will find this adventure deeply satisfying, and will be eager to find out what happens next.
