The Christmas Memory Quilt

Illustrated by Jennifer Gaskin

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 7

It is June and Brynne is celebrating her birthday so she is very surprised when her grandmother gives her a gift which is wrapped in Christmas paper and bows. “Merry Christmas” Grandma says. When Brynne opens the box she discovers that it is full of colorful squares of fabrics. Grandma explains that the gift is a birthday gift for her but a Christmas gift for someone else. Brynne is going to turn all the little squares of fabric into a quilt and then she is going to send the quilt to a lonely little baby in a “faraway country.”

Every day Brynne walks over to grandma’s house to work on her quilt. Grandma is also working on a quilt, and as they work together grandma tells Brynne about past Christmases in the family. Brynne hears about when her mother was little and when she herself was a little baby and slept under a newly made quilt. And, as Christmas approaches, Grandma tells Brynne that timeless story of that first Christmas in Bethlehem.

Then, at last Brynne’s little quilt is ready and she sends it off to the orphanage in Romania packed with love and lots of memories. What Brynne does not expect is that her quilt will be coming back to her in the not too distant future and it will be bringing a surprise with it. On Christmas day she finds out just how wonderful her quilt memories are going to be in the future.

This is a very different kind of holiday story. The author not only touches on the joy that that can be found in sharing holiday memories but she also looks at how a family prepares for the arrival of an adopted child. Through her quilt making a lonely little girl connects with grandmother and at the same time she makes important connects with the past and the future.

Carefully written and softly illustrated in watercolor, this is a thoughtful and meaningful picture book. At the back of the book the author includes directions on how to make your own Christmas Quilt.
