The Boy who was raised by librarians
Carla Morris
Illustrated by Brad Sneed
Picture Book
Ages 4 to 8
Peachtree Publishers, 2007, 978-1-56145-391-7
Melvin spends most of his time in the public library. The library is simply the place he best likes to be because it is organized and categorized and because the three reference librarians, Marge, Betty, and Leeola, are there. These three wonderful women are always willing to answer his questions and to help him in any way they can. Why they even help him round up his escaped insects when he accidentally lets a jar full of them free in the library. Not only that but they also identify, classify and catalogue them as they gather the insects up.
And this is how things go on as Melvin grows up. Marge, Betty and Leeola continue to answer Melvin’s barrage of questions. They help him rehearse for his school play and showed him how to store his baseball card collection. They help him practice for the spelling bee when he is in 4th grade and cheer for him when he wins trophies, and prizes, and contests in 5th, 6th, and 7th, grade. They are there to cry “with pride and happiness” when he graduates and they receive all kinds of letters and emails from him when he goes to college. And they are also there when Melvin comes back to the library, but this time things are a little different.
For thousands of children, the public library is a place where they can not only escape into the world of books and where they can find out all kinds of fascinating things about the world. The public library is also a place where they can spend time with those wonderful book people – librarians. Public library librarians play an important role in children’s lives and this wonderful picture book is a charming, warm hearted tribute to them all. Vibrant illustrations which are peopled with energetic characters are combined with a well written text to make this a winning title.
