The Book of Shadowboxes: A story of the ABC’s

Laura L. Seeley

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 8

Peachtree Publishers, 1990, 1-56145-072-3

Let’s join Shadow, a gentle little fellow who looks a little like a ghost and who wears a pair of cozy looking socks. Shadow is going to take us on a rhyming word and picture tour of the alphabet. For every letter of the alphabet he has a series of shadowboxes in which there are pictures of things that begin with that letter. Shadow will talk about some of the things that you will see in the pictures in his rhyming text, but there are other things in the pictures – some of which are cleverly hidden – that you will have to find yourself.

For example on the C page he tells us about the clouds, the castle, and the cat in the tree that we see in the shadowboxes. And, if we look carefully we will also see a cupcake, an ear of corn, and a canoe in the pictures as well. Look in the back of the book and you will find lists of all the hidden things in the pictures. To get you started, at the bottom of every page, Shadow sits waiting to ask you to find one of the hidden things. On the C page he asks you “where are my chocolate chip cookies.”

This is a clever alphabet book, and children will love the magical illustrations that are colorful, packed with details, and very appealing. The rhymes flow easily, and they positively beg to be read out loud.
