Snow White

Jane Ray

Novelty Book

Ages 5 to 8

Candlewick Press, 2009, 0763644730

There once lived a queen who very much wanted to have a child “with hair as black as the winter branches, skin as white as snow, and lips as red as blood.” To her delight, the Queen soon found out that she was going to have a baby, and when her daughter arrived she had black hair, fair skin, and rosy lips. Alas the poor queen was not able to enjoy her baby for long because she died soon after the child’s arrival. Her husband the king married again, and his new wife had no love for the baby, who was called Snow White. Indeed she soon grew very jealous of Snow White because she grew into beautiful young woman.

Most of us know this story very well. What makes this book different is they way in which the tale is presented. For each double page spread, the author has created gorgeous three-dimensional pictures, all of which will give readers the feeling that they are watching a play unfolding before their eyes. Layers of art open up as pages are turned, and the text is hidden under side panels so that feeling that one is looking at a mini theatre is complete.

This title would make a lovely gift for a reader who enjoys and perhaps collects novelty titles.
