Scaredy Squirrel at night

Melanie Watt

Picture Book (Series)

Ages 4 to 8

Kids Can Press, 2009, 978-1-55453-288-9

Scaredy Squirrel has a very big problem – he is afraid to go to sleep. If he goes to sleep, he may have bad dreams and that is just too terrifying to contemplate. Scaredy Squirrel therefore decides to stay awake, all night and every night. He counts stars, works on a scrapbook, and crashes cymbals to keep himself awake. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation can have some serious side effects, none of which are particularly pleasant.

Then, as if things are not bad enough already, Scaredy Squirrel reads his horoscope and he learns that “all your dreams will come true” at midnight. Horrors! All his nightmares are going to appear on the scene to persecute poor Scaredy Squirrel. What should he do?

Readers who enjoyed Scaredy Squirrel’s previous adventures are going to love this delightfully silly and thoroughly enjoyable story. Children who are afraid of bad dreams and things that go bump in the night will feel comforted when they read about Scaredy Squirrel’s outrageous misadventures. Surely if Scaredy Squirrel – the most obsessive and phobic character on the planet – can cope with bedtime, so can they.
