Scaredy-Pants: A Halloween Story

Joan Holub

Illustrated by Will Terry

Ages 3 to 5

Simon and Schuster, 2007, 1-4169-0956-7

The young ants are out in costume on Halloween night when they come to the Ant Hill Halloween Fun House. They decide to go in though Dee is not too keen on the idea. Wade and Chuck tease her about being afraid. When they are inside the house the ants see several things that are decidedly creepy and each time Dee covers her eyes with fear.

The ants find a trail of candy which they follow upstairs until they find a chest. When they open the chest a terrifying Halloween fright awaits them.

Beginner readers will greatly enjoy this “Pre-Level 1” reader. There is a very simple rhyming text in which common words are used frequently and other words are repeated to help with recognition. Illustrations on every page give the readers visual clues to help with story comprehension. Best of all, everyone will enjoy the surprise ending!
