  There is snow on the ground and a chill in the air, and two children and their grandmother venture out to feed their “forest friends.” One day, just before Christmas, they find a weary and cold deer lying in the snow. Gently the three kind people get the deer into the house, where they feed him and put him in front of the fire to warm.

  In the middle of the night one of the children looks out of the window and sees what looks like a deer flying “straight across the sky.” It is hard to believe that such a thing could be, but when the child looks for the deer in the house, the animal is gone.

  On Christmas morning the children have a wonderful time opening all their gifts. They think that all the packages have been opened when they see that there is one more present under the tree. When they open the card that comes with the gift they discover that their former guest was very special indeed.

  In this beautifully illustrated picture book the author tells his Christmas tale using clever and well-written rhymes. Young readers will enjoy finding out who the deer visitor was, and they will appreciate the special gift that the children in the story get.
