Reaching for the Moon

Buzz Aldrin

Illustrated by Wendell Minor

Non-Fiction

Ages 6 to 9

HarperCollins, 2005, 0060554479

When Buzz Aldrin was only two years old, his father took him flying in a plane that was “painted to look like an eagle.” Buzz was both frightened and thrilled. It was the first of many flights that he would make in his life.

Buzz was a determined boy. He held on to the things that mattered to him, and he dared to try new things, even when they were full of unknowns. He loved to win, and was willing to do what it took to reach his goals.

His personality was well suited to a military life, and when he finished high school, Buzz went to West Point. He hoped West Point would serve as a stepping-stone to getting into the Air Force, which is what he really wanted to be.

Buzz did indeed get into the Air Force where he flew jets. He loved “going as fast as a human being could go,” and he served his country in the Korean War. Though flying jets was a grand adventure, Buzz decided to pursue an even greater goal – getting into the space program.

Readers who are interested in space and the first moon landing, will be fascinated by this book. It is truly extraordinary to read the words of one of the men who actually walked on the moon in July, 1969. Buzz Aldrin’s narrative is honest and unaffected, and he gives his readers a feel for what it must have been like to make the journey in the Apollo 11.

Wendel Minor’s paintings skillfully compliment Buzz Aldrin’s words. His renderings of space and the lunar landscape are a joy to look at.
