  Every year, in the ninth lunar month, Muslims all over the world celebrate Ramadan. Ramadan is a time when Muslims fast, pray, and give alms to the needy. It is a time when Muslims “all over the world honor Allah [God] together.”

  Every day for a month Muslims fast. They eat a meal together before the sun rises, and then they don’t eat or drink anything until the sun sets many hours later. Going without food and water for such a long time is not easy, but Muslims do this with pride. They pray five times during the day, and they listen to readings from the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

  When the month comes to a close, Muslims celebrate together during Eid al-Fitr. Children receive gifts and many people buy new clothes and shoes. There are parties and festivities to attend. It is a joyous and happy time.

  In this “On My Own Holidays” title, the author gives her readers a comprehensive picture of what takes place during Ramadan. The language is easy to follow, and the narrative is sensitive and interesting.
