Pup and Hound at Sea

Susan Hood

Illustrated by Linda Hendry

Fiction (Series)

Ages 5 to 6

Kids Can Press, 2006, 1-55337-805-9

Pup has found something in the bushes and he is howling for Hound to come and help him retrieve it. What is it? Why, it is a raft! Together Pup and Hound push the raft out of the bushes and into the stream. The two dogs jump onto the raft, they are going on a voyage, “Pirate Pup and crew.”

The two dogs have a grand time until they reach some rapids. Hound is not at all happy about these rapids and he does his best to stay on board the raft and “to look brave.” Alas for the doggy crew of the pirate vessel! They have run aground and been shipwrecked! The dogs swim ashore and then Pup picks up a scent. With an “Ah-ROO!” the little dog is off. Poor tired Hound follows in his wake. What is Pup going to get into now?

Fans of this delightful canine duo will not be disappointed with this funny and decidedly piratical adventure. Patient and kind Hound goes along with his young companion’s activities, even when they scare him more than a little. An easy to follow text and amusing illustrations combine to make this a perfect little book for young readers.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
