•Barefoot Books (USA & UK)
Barefoot Books is an independent children’s publisher dedicated to creating better books for children. After ten years of publishing, we have a reputation for producing some of the finest picture books in the world. From small beginnings - we started the company from our respective homes in 1993 with no staff - Barefoot has grown into a robust international business with a team of 23 working out of busy offices in the UK and the USA
Our children are our best critics. They always have plenty to say about every project from the initial manuscript stage, to the selection of artists and the design and production of the books. They have grown up with illustrators arriving for breakfast and couriers calling at midnight, and in a home environment where they are surrounded by literature, creativity and a busy energetic working atmosphere. Just as they have learned from the projects we develop, so we have learned from the many books and ideas they have brought home from school and from further afield. We have also gained all kinds of insights and inspiration from each child’s unique abilities, interests and talents.
Our approach is "less is more" - we aim to be selective in what we publish, and to make sure that every project has enduring value as well as lots of child appeal. Our commitment is to bring art and story to today’s children in a way that encourages their own creativity and honors the diversity and wealth of the many traditional cultures of the world. We believe that these cultures have important messages to offer us about our place in the web of life, so many of our titles introduce new and ancient perspectives on the world we share.

•Candlewick Press
Once upon a time, a young Englishman named Sebastian Walker set out to publish the very best books for children. With publishing experience in sales, a small bank loan, and a huge entrepreneurial spirit, he launched Walker Books in 1978 in the spare bedroom of his home, and convinced Wendy Boase, a brilliant editor, and Amelia Edwards, a visionary designer, to join him in his venture.
The three created a uniquely creative working environment and offered a level of support that was new in publishing, not just for their staff, but for the prominent authors and illustrators who quickly came aboard. These top names in publishing -- including Helen Oxenbury, Nicola Bayley, and Colin McNaughton -- were welcome to drop in unexpectedly at Walker Books, meet with their editors at any time, and even work in the pleasant, light-filled offices. (As you can imagine, the staff soon outgrew Sebastian's spare bedroom.) Years before Internet start-ups, Walker Books not only served lunch to its staff and visitors daily, but offered their authors and illustrators shares in the company profits. This generosity is still unique in publishing.
The message was clear: the books and their creators were the stars of Walker Books. This extraordinary commitment, support, and generosity earned the company a loyalty that endures even today
When Sebastian Walker chose to expand internationally, he chose bookish yet vibrant Cambridge, Massachusetts, which reminded him of the London area where Walker Books eventually made its home. Sadly, Sebastian died in 1991 shortly after launching Candlewick Press in Cambridge, and Walker Books Australia in Syd ney, but his commitment to publishing excellent children's books lives on -- and flourishes -- as a legacy on three continents.
Candlewick Press opened with a mere six employees, and now our staff has expanded to more than sixty. We've published more than 1,500 remarkable children's books in ten years, including the classics, Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?, by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Barbara Firth; Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram; My Very First Mother Goose, edited by Iona Opie and illustrated by Rosemary Wells; and It's Perfectly Normal, by Robie H. Harris and illustrated by Michael Emberley.
At the dawn of the millennium, the growth within the company promises an even more expansive
and exciting future. With our parent company, Walker Books in London and in Sydney, a growing
Web presence, and most importantly, the highest-quality children books to span the globe,
Candlewick Press is today part of a worldwide company with an infinite horizon. Ten years - it may
not sound like a long time, but what an incredible decade it's been. And this is just the beginning.

•Groundwood Books
"Groundwood Books, established in 1978, is dedicated to the production of children's books for all ages, including fiction, picture books and non-fiction. We publish in Canada, the United States and Latin America. Our books aim to be of the highest possible quality in both language and illustration. Our primary focus has been on works by Canadians, though we sometimes also buy outstanding books from other countries. Many of our books tell the stories of people whose voices are not always heard in this age of global publishing by media conglomerates. Books by the First Peoples of this hemisphere have always been a special interest, as have those of others who through circumstance have been marginalized and whose contribution to our society is not always visible. Since 1998 we have been publishing works by people of Latin American origin living in the Americas. Libros Tigrillo, our Spanish imprint, is part of this new venture. We believe that by reflecting intensely individual experiences, our books are of universal interest. The fact that our authors are now
published around the world attests to this and to their quality. Even more important, our books, most of which
remain in print, are read and loved by children."

Shenanigan Books (USA)

Shenanigan Books of Summit, New Jersey publishes children’s books that reflect the spirit of founder Mary Watson, who has been illustrating children’s books for 20 years. Started in 2004, the company currently has seven titles to offer, three of which will be out in September of this year.

The impetus for the company came when Mary finished The Heart of the Lion, a collection of stories from author/husband Pete Watson’s days as a Peace Corp. volunteer in West Africa. “I took the book around to several publishing houses I knew in New York and, although they loved the book, they didn’t think that they could sell it,” said Mary. “They didn’t want to take the gamble, so I decided to.” Already a published author/illustrator, she knew that this experience and her background in graphic design would be what she needed to start her own company. “And I wanted to have fun with it too.”

Shenanigan Books works with a seasoned staff of freelance writers and illustrators that Mary matches up for projects. Our titles include:

The More the Merrier

The Heart of the Lion

The Book of Mermaids

The Birds of the Harbor

I Like Gum

A Night of Tamales and Roses

The Paper Dragonfly

Mary's earlier works include: My Own Big Bed, published by Green Willow, The Butterfly Seeds and The Market Lady and the Mango Tree which are both by Tamborine, a division of William Morrow.

•Tundra (Canada)
Tundra Books is renowned for its innovations. From the time of its founding, Tundra has been dedicated to helping people tell their own stories, to introducing gallery artists to young children, to creating a balance between information and beauty in non-fiction books, and to keeping in print the books children love, so they can share them years later with their own children. In 1967 May Cutler, a Montreal-based writer and editor, founded the company. She wanted to do what few publishing houses in Canada were doing at the time - focus on creating books for children. But not just any books. Because May Cutler loved all of the arts so much - drama, painting, and dance - she decided to introduce children to the talented artists in their own land. She wanted to create "children's books as works of art." After 28 years, Tundra Books was sold to McClelland & Stewart, Canada's leading literary publisher. In 1996, the offices moved to Toronto, and a new publisher, Kathy Lowinger, took over. Kathy is dedicated to keeping the spirit of Tundra alive and this publishing house produces some of the most lovely picture books and unique novels in thechildren's publishing world today.

•Tiger Tales (USA)
It was almost five years ago when Elisabeth Prial and Barb Knight, veterans of the children's book industry, decided that the time was right to draw upon their diverse experience to offer a cohesive and intelligent list of imaginative and entertaining books for children. And so, tiger tales was born. The resulting list of children's books offers an exciting assortment of high quality kids books built upon a strong editorial and graphic foundation. But most of all, a list of books that appeal to the interests of their target audience -- children!
In developing the tiger tales list, it was imperative to create books that address the same events and everyday experiences to which children easily relate. Combining topics such as playing with friends, exploring their neighborhoods, welcoming a new sibling into the family and learning about oneself and others, are just a few of the storylines highlighted by bold, bright, colorful and child friendly illustrations. In pursuit of their goal, tiger tales has garnered the positive attention and accolades of many reviewers.
"As a small and independent press, it was important to carve out our niche," says Elisabeth. "So we decided to focus on books that would appeal to younger children, ages 6 months to 8 years old." For tiger tales, this meant offering the variety of formats that work best for this age group - hardcover picture books, paperbacks and novelty books. Included in tiger tales' list is an imaginative selection of novelty formats including pop-up books, lift-the-flap books, cloth books, and touch and feel books. In this age of children being saturated by all types of media, tiger tales books engage even the savviest kids of the exploding multi-media generation. "Giles Andreae is my favorite author on our list," says Barb Knight. "I love his style of writing, and kids really respond to his verse." Elisabeth is a bit more attached to the story of Mr. Wolf's Pancakes. "I watch children and see how instinctively clever they are - and this story interprets well known classics for today's children with warmth and humor."
What a pleasure it is to work as an independent agree Elisabeth and Barb. The opportunity to work directly with the people who read, purchase and distribute the books about which we feel so very passionately makes being a small press worthwhile. Meeting with professionals who understand children and deal with them every day --seeing the overwhelming positive reaction they have to the books we publish -- is extremely satisfying.
"We feel we're riding the wave of the future," concur Elisabeth and Barb. With the consolidation of the large publishers there is plenty of room for new and innovative ideas to be implemented by the small press industry. As a fresh and creative new small press, tiger tales is certainly poised to contribute to the future of children's book publishing. This consistently cohesive list is a wonderful addition to any children's library collection.

•Walker and Company (USA)
When Sam Walker founded Walker & Company 45 years ago, in 1959, Sputnik had recently been launched. Dwight Eisenhower was president, and department stores were America's primary booksellers. As with almost everything, the publishing landscape today is utterly different than it was then
From the start, Walker's list has reflected varied personal tastes and publishing opportunities. Sam Walker loved history, publishing over the years authors like the legendary journalist, Harrison Salisbury. In its many guises, history has remained a cornerstone of our program: In recent years, Dava Sobel's Longitude and Galileo's Daughter, and Ross King's Michelangelo & the Pope's Ceiling were New York Times bestsellers, while Mark Kurlansky's Cod and Salt, King's Brunelleschi's Dome, Diana Preston's The Boxer Rebellion and Lusitania, and Andro Linklater's Measuring America, among many others, have appeared in our catalogs.
Sam Walker was drawn to science writing as well. The prolific Isaac Asimov published more books with Walker than with any other publisher, and we now enjoy the talents of science writers whose skills bring the history of science and the natural world alive-such as David Bodanis (E=mc2), Simon Singh (Fermat's Enigma), Chet Raymo (Climbing Brandon and An Intimate Look at the Night Sky) and, most recently, Harvard astronomer Owen Gingerich (the provocatively titled The Book Nobody Read).
Soon after the company was founded, Beth Walker started our children's division, which has now been a central part of the company for some 40 years. Isaac Asimov was as skilled in writing for young readers as for older ones-his dozens of titles can still be found in libraries across the country-and over the years we have published many luminaries of children's publishing, among them Barbara Cooney, Tomie de Paola, Michael McCurdy, and Pat and Fred McKissack, whose Long Hard Journey won the Coretta Scott King Award.
In September 2004, we will publish perhaps the highest profile collaboration of author and illustrator in our history: Kathleen Krull's A Woman for President, the amazing life story of Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for President of the United States, illustrated by Jane Dyer. In prior years, Kevin O'Malley's Miss Malarkey series has won awards and plaudits from teachers, parents, and children alike, while Karen Gravelle's The Period Book remains an annual bestseller eight years after it was published, and is fast approaching 300,000 copies in print.
While our mystery/thriller publishing is now more occasional than it used to be, we remain committed to the genre. Among the earliest titles Walker published, in 1962 and 1963, were the first two books by the celebrated novelist, John le Carré, which introduced his legendary spy, George Smiley. More than 40 years later, in September 2004, we will proudly issue new hardcover editions of Call for the Dead and A Murder of Quality, with introductions by the author and forewords by P. D. James and Otto Penzler, bringing these books full circle on our list.
2004 was a momentous one for Walker & Company. In the fall we celebrated our 45th anniversary, and as this new year started, we began our new life as a division of Bloomsbury USA. The two companies already shared so much in entrepreneurial spirit and editorial vision. This alliance brings both teams of authors and books into the fold of a unique global company where quality books remain at the heart of the business.
