There were once three princesses who were waited on from the moment that they got up to the moment that they went to bed. They always had to be on their best behavior, and they always had to look their best. They couldn’t do the kinds of things that normal children do, and one day the youngest princess, Isabella, decided that she had had enough. She hated her prim and proper life and she wanted to do something interesting. She wanted to get dirty and do things for herself for a change.

And so Isabella threw her crown into the goldfish pond and began to make an enormous fuss. Her furious father decided to punish Isabella by making her work in the palace kitchens and then in the pigsty. The problem with this punishment was that Isabella loved the work. What will the king do next?

In this funny picture book Cornelia Funke shows her readers that there is a lot to be said for a normal life. With a simple text and humorous illustrations Cornelia Funke turns the typical princess story on its head and the result is delightful.
