Alex has no interest in ever working for MI6 again and he has no plans to do so. And then Alex gets into a little bit of trouble. When he decides to tackle a young man who is dealing drugs at his school he ends up breaking more than a few laws. The people at MI6 agree to get the police off Alex’s back if he will do a little investigating for them. High in the Swiss Alps there is a special school called Point Blanc where the sons of rich and powerful men go to get “straightened out.” MI6 is curious about this school, and being a boy Alex is the perfect person to get inside the school to find out if the principal, Dr Grief, has anything to do with the sudden deaths of the fathers of two of the school’s former students.
Posing as the son of a wealthy businessman, Alex soon discovers that Point Blanc is a very strange place indeed. Only six boys attend the school and most of them are behaving very strangely. Alex befriends one of the boys and comes to agree with him that the whole setup is decidedly “creepy.” Something is definitely not right but it is only when he does a little snooping around that Alex comes to fully appreciate how diabolical and dangerous Dr. Grief is. He is a man with a mission and he will do anything to get what he wants.
Bizarre events, assassins, wonderful technological gizmos, a mad genius who wants to take over the world, and an evil henchwoman. This story has it all and more besides. Anthony Horowitz has created a fascinating thriller for young people, once again giving his young protagonist great challenges to face and at the same time letting him grow and develop as a character.
Simon Prebble gets into the roles in this book so thoroughly that he seems to become the young man trying to survive a violent and dangerous adult world; he, for a time, is the mad scientist who wants to make the world his playground. With a rich and highly adaptive voice he brings this exciting story to life.
This is the second story in the Alex Rider series.
