Oooh! Picasso

Mil Niepold and Jeanyves Verdu

Non fiction picture book (Series)

Ages 3 to 5

Tricycle Press, 2009, 1582462658

The great artist Pablo Picasso loved to create sculptures out of things that he found lying around. He used pieces of metal, cardboard, clay, plaster, and all kinds to make his sculptures. In this book, we are going to look at some of the sculptures that Picasso made.

If you look at the sculptures from a distance, it is easy to see what they are. What about if you look at them up close? What do you see then? Here is a piece of cardboard. It looks a little like a ladder or a stairway. Where does it go? Here is another piece of that same sculpture. It looks like “a paper mask waiting to be worn.” Now let’s step back and take a look at what we have in front of us. Goodness, it is not a stairway or a mask, instead we are looking at a three-dimensional sculpture of a cardboard guitar.

In this delightful picture book, the authors look at five of Pablo Picasso’s sculptures. They show young art fans that things look very different when you look at them up close (or upside down for that matter). Children will see that their imaginations will come up with all kinds of answers to the “what is this?” question.

Wonderfully musical language and splendid photographs make this is a winning title in the Oooh! Artist Series.
