One Nation: America by Numbers
Devin Scillian
Illustrated by Pam Carroll
Non-fiction Picture Book
Ages 4 to 7
Sleeping Bear Press, 2002, 1-58536-063-5
"One Nation: America by Numbers" is a numbers book with a twist. Very cleverly written by Devin Scillian the reader learns a great deal about America without really realizing it. The author uses the numbers one through fifteen, twenty, fifty, and one hundred to tell the story of the Unites States both in verse and with accompanying text in the border of each double-page spread. The author has found numbers in the most unusual places to describe places, historic events, people, and principals. Pam Carroll's full-color illustrations beautifully complement the topics on each page and they also set the mood of the book; thoughtful, contemplative, and sincere.
